Alright friends, it’s time to start arming ourselves with scripture. The best way to fight any of our battles is with scripture and prayer. When we get worried or become fearful, use bible verses to battle back.
Whatever we face, God is with us. Always. One of His names, Immanuel, means those very words, “God with us”. Doesn’t that bring comfort to consider this truth?
When we fight fear, know that Immanuel is right there with us. Depend on his strength and use his armor, which comes from the Holy Spirit.
We all have times when we struggle to find and recognize God’s presence but never forget, He goes before us, with us, and behind us!
The Storm and Chaos of Worry
The other morning it was pouring down rain as my husband was leaving for work while it was still dark outside. As he left the house and I heard the pounding of the rain pour harder on the roof, I felt my chest start to tighten as I considered him driving through the storm in the dark.
Fear and worry were creeping their way into my mind before my day was barely even getting started. I had a flood of questions wash over me:
- What if he gets into an accident?
- Will he be safe all the way to work?
- What if something happens to him?
Of course, the questions didn’t stop there. They led to thoughts of worst-case scenarios.
It very quickly sent me down an anxious spiral that I knew I needed to deal with STAT.
I grabbed my bible and said out loud, “Ok, Jesus, take this from me. I need your help.”
Arming Ourselves with the Bible
I felt myself getting caught up in fear and worry and this triggered me to reach for my armor. My precious bible.
I immediately went to one of my favorite bible verses when I’m worried, Philippians 4:6-7.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
With thanksgiving…with thanksgiving…with thanksgiving…repeated itself over and over in my rattled mind.
Father, thank you for being with me. Thank you for your precious word that is active and living. Father, thank you for being the Creator of all things. Thank you for this pounding rain that you control. Thank you for both your power and love for your creation.
And just like that, right there in the middle of those words, I could feel my heart calm. I realized my mind wasn’t so frazzled.
It was a moment where I just stopped and noticed.
It was quiet.
My mind was quiet, my heart was settled, and I realized it wasn’t raining anymore.
The storm had passed. The one that was outside and the one that was inside me.
I never even thought to ask for the rain to stop. I was too consumed with worry to think logically.
Does this happen to you as well? Do you get so frazzled that you can’t focus on anything else but the fear and worry storming around you?
When Worried Let Bible Verses Become Your Default
It’s time for battle and it’s time to Raise Your Sword. “…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Ephesians 6:17
The word of God is life, truth, and power. There’s power through the words of the bible because they’re God’s words. They soothe our soul and calm our spirits.
Greg Laurie says, “When we are tempted, the most effective weapon that God has given to us as believers is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
If you are tempted to worry, or doubt, or fear, or be anxious, you have the sword of the Spirit available to you! Fight with it!
Soak in truths and promises, over and over, and pray them out loud. Let them wash over you and be the truth you stand on.
It’s exactly what Jesus did when he was tempted in the wilderness. Over and over he turned to scripture and said, “it is written..”
