Praying the Psalms – 7 Days of Prayers

Sharing is caring!

I’m sure you know by now how much I love the book of Psalms. Don’t worry, we will continue to give love and attention to the other books of the bible, too! Today, I invite you to join me as we begin Praying the Psalms for the next seven days!

In a few of my bibles, there’s a list at the end of Psalms titled, “Where To Get Help In The Book Of Psalms”. It goes on to say, “When you feel….”, “When you’re facing…” and “When you want…” Each list contains at least 25 topics with chapters from Psalms that speak specifically to those topics.

Check and see if your bible has this list as well.

It reminds me of a Psalms 911 or SOS flare. Whether you’re feeling afraid, insecure, lost, or guilty, or if you’re seeking acceptance, guidance, or wisdom, the list shares which Psalms address those particular topics.

Praying the Psalms: Anthems of Praise

I can remember being a teenager and opening my bible to this page and looking up specific verses to give me direction on whatever I was feeling or facing. Oh, the emotions of a teenager!

I’m not saying I always applied what I was reading at the time…but there was a reason I always turned to the Psalms.

Every single time I would look up one of those verses or chapters dedicated to whichever topic I was feeling, I would encounter an even bigger God.

Stresses and fears would diminish and hope and encouragement from the Lord would increase.

I discovered that the Psalms bring such great comfort to my soul. It would always start out with me searching for answers and while I may not always come away with exactly what to do, I always walked away with such peace from the God of Creation.

He’s living and breathing all throughout the bible beckoning us to know Him. Psalms are anthems of praise, songs, and poetry that will lead you to worship, confession, and a heart of adoration for who God is.

Praying the Psalms – 7 Days of Prayers

For the next 7 days, I invite you to pray a verse from Psalms each day.

Don’t worry, this is not an elaborate or extensive commitment. Each day will have a single verse to be prayed.

The heart of Praying the Psalms is to encounter our powerful and loving Heavenly Father. You’ll discover so many different types of prayers in the Psalms.

Each verse represents life-giving truth and promises that we can pray for ourselves as children of God.

These verses will be a way we can tuck God’s word in our hearts each day for the next week. They all will point to His glory and strength.

I’ve also included Questions to Ponder, What We Can Know, and a prayer prompt if you desire more than the verse alone. Also, if you’d like to go even deeper still, read the entire chapter each verse references.

Each passage will take us to our Almighty God.

Praying the Psalms

Day 1: Shelter of the Most High

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1 NLT

This is a promise for the one who lives or dwells in the shelter of God.

Questions to ponder: Where does your heart dwell? Does your heart live and reside in the shelter of God? Are there other heart shelters in your life that you dwell in instead?

What we can know: God is the only safe place, shelter, and refuge we can always rely on.

Pray: Ask the Lord to help you trust Him as your shelter and protector today.

Day 2: The Lord is good

The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray. Psalm 25:8 NLT

Immediately we’re told the Lord is good and does what is right. He displays this by showing us the way to forgiveness when we sin or go astray. He shows us the proper path but it is our daily choice to follow it.

Questions to ponder: Do you know Him in this way? Is there a sin that needs to be given to our Good and Righteous God?

What we can know: In God’s goodness and compassion, He is always ready to lead us back to Him. He deeply cares that we follow His proper path to forgiveness without limit.

Pray: Ask the Lord for forgiveness and to direct your steps to match His.

Day 3: The Lord is my Light, Salvation, and Protector

The Lord is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Psalm 27:1 NLT

Twice David questions why he should be afraid/tremble. Notice what He does first both times. He declares Who God is then he addresses his fear.

Questions to ponder: Have you tried this approach when you face fear? Can you say with David that the Lord is your light, your salvation, your fortress, and your protector?

What we can know: The Lord protects and can be fully trusted.

Pray: Ask the Lord to create a new habit when you face fears: declare who God is first.

Day 4: The Lord’s love and faithfulness is unfailing

Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Psalm 36:5 NLT

The Lord’s love and faithfulness are beyond what our minds can even perceive.

Questions to ponder: Are you convinced of the Lord’s unfailing love in your life? Do you know Him to be faithful?

What we can know: God’s love never fails and He is faithful in all things.

Pray: Give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and for His faithfulness that cannot be measured.

Day 5: The Lord brings joy

Praise the LORD! How joyful are those who fear the LORD and delight in obeying his commands. Psalm 112:1 NLT

This verse begins with praise, which we can never give the Lord enough of. Fear in this verse is a reverence for who God is – being in awe of God.

Questions to ponder: Can you say you are in awe of the Lord? Do you have gratitude, thankfulness, and awe of who He is? Do you delight in obeying His Word?

What we can know: Joy comes when we revere the LORD!

Pray: Ask the Lord for faith in revering Him.

Day 6: The Lord is All-Knowing

O LORD, you have examined my heart and you know everything about me. Psalm 139:1 NLT

God knows every single detail about you. He knows the deepest longings of your heart, your fears, hopes, hurts, dreams, desires, needs, and everything in between.

Questions to ponder: Are you honest with the Lord who knows everything about you? Do you know that you can approach God with openness because He already knows every single detail about you?

What we can know: God knows and loves you fully and completely.

Day 7: The Lord is good

Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8 NLT

Ah, a beautiful invitation: taste and see that the LORD is good!

Questions to ponder: Have you experienced the Lord’s goodness? Have you RSVP’d His invitation? Have you experienced the joy of His shelter?

What we can know: The LORD is GOOD.

Ask the Lord for help in following and trusting Him in your day and discover His neverending goodness.

The Power of the Spirit

Friend, we have the Spirit within us to walk these verses out. It took me a really long time before I surrendered to this truth. It’s not possible on our own.

All you have to do is call on Him!

I pray these next 7 days are sweet and savoring moments with our Heavenly Father.

Remember, as we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (James 4:8). Use these verses to draw near to Him.

I’m so excited to hear how your week goes after Praying the Psalms!
