How to Start Reading the Bible Daily

Let’s dive into learning how to read the bible daily and how to start reading the bible each day!

I’m sharing 5 P’s to help you get into the habit of reading the bible each day: Plan. Place. Posture. Patience. Priority.

1. How to Start Reading the Bible Daily – PLAN.

To develop the habit of daily bible reading, you need to begin with a plan. Without a plan, you’ll find yourself staring at a big book and wondering what in the world you should do with it.

This plan doesn’t have to be complex. Determine or decide where or what you desire to read and set aside time to do so each day.

If you’re looking for a reading plan to read through the bible, this is an excellent free resource: McLean Bible Church Reading Plan.

Another outstanding free resource that goes along with this daily bible reading plan is the Pray the Word Podcast. Each day, David Platt prays a verse or two from the current day’s reading. This podcast is anywhere from 3-5 minutes long.

Finally, if you want to go more in-depth, this MAPS Guide (Meditate/Memorize, Apply, Pray, Share) is another outstanding free resource to help guide your bible reading.

You will always only benefit from spending time in God’s Living Word!

2. How to Start Reading the Bible Daily – PLACE.

Once you know where and what to read to begin reading the bible, you need to determine the place you will read your Bible each day. This may seem a bit ridiculous to even mention but it’s important.

If you’re setting aside time in your day to read the bible daily, you’re basically making time for the Maker of heaven and earth. It should be without distractions. He delights in this time with you.

Find a quiet spot and plan to encounter our Living God through His Word. Pick a place that you can be alone and without interuptions.

Not only does His Word satisfy us, but Psalm 119 also shows how His Word revives us, encourages us, renews us, and gives us hope. Find out more reasons from Psalm 119 of why we should read the bible daily.

3. How to Start Reading the Bible Daily – POSTURE.

When you’re making daily bible reading a habit, consider your posture. Pray and ask God for the desire and thirst for His Word. Ask Him to show you Himself and clear away any distractions or mental noise that may infiltrate your time reading the bible.

It’s good to note here that moving your phone away from your bible is probably a good idea!

As you read, you’re seeking to know Him more. Consider what the scriptures say about God, His heart for you personally, about His nature, and who He is.

Humble yourself before Him and be willing to be led. Pray and ask God to open your heart to hear Him.

4. How to Start Reading the Bible Daily – PATIENCE.

When it comes to beginning to read the bible, have patience! Trust that God is working every single time you open the bible to read. There may be days that you read the bible and it doesn’t “feel” like you’re getting anything out of it.

Don’t let this discourage you! Before you know it, you’ll be going about your day, and all of a sudden, He’ll bring to mind something you read days before and it will be exactly what you needed at that moment.

It takes patience – and persistence – as you start reading the bible daily. Commit to it. Trust God that He will satisfy the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things (Psalm 107:9)!

Another important point is to know that there is a spiritual war raging around us. Evil gains ground when Christians are complacent and passive. Don’t fall for the distractions.

When we get in the habit of daily bible reading, not only do we grow to know our Heavenly Father more, we also grow in knowledge and understanding by His Spirit, and we begin to realize the power of Christ in us if we’ve accepted him as our Lord and Savior.

This is the last thing evil wants – Christians armed with the truth! So remain diligent in reading your Bible daily, even when there are moments of struggle, doubt, or distractions.

5. How to Start Reading the Bible Daily – PRIORITY.

The only way to develop the holy habit of daily Bible reading is to make it a priority. My son and I joke about Mr. No-If’s-Ands-Or-Buts. He has no place when it comes to making something a priority, especially when it involves reading the Bible daily!

If something is a priority, we make it happen because it’s important and valuable to us.

If you need to, schedule daily Bible reading time in your planner – with a Sharpie marker. Or, commit to no social media or electronics until you’ve spent time reading the Bible.

I certainly don’t want anything to become legalistic, but think about what ways you can set yourself up for optimal Bible reading time.

If we’re serious about being disciples and faithful followers of Jesus, we’ll make reading the Bible a priority. Friend, whatever you decide to give up to make this space for God, I can guarantee you that before long, He will completely captivate you through His Word and you’ll always crave more and more!

“Am I learning how to use my Bible? The way to become complete for the Master’s service is to be well soaked in the Bible; some of us only exploit certain passages. Our Lord wants to give us continuous instruction out of His word; continuous instruction turns hearers into disciples.” Oswald Chambers

How do you read the bible every morning?

As you start reading the Bible daily, to many it may be important to read the Bible in the morning to help start your day. Some people are not morning people, OR mornings may not even be an option. Don’t let this deter you. The essential thing is to find time each day.

If you do not have a Bible version that you understand, shop for a version that suits you! I love using this ESV Study Bible. In the past, I’ve also used the NLT Study Bible. Or, if you’re looking for a chronological bible, I used this Chronological NLT Bible several years ago and loved the margins of notes and for those interested in coloring verses, that is an option as well with guided reading for each day.

I share about different Bible versions in this post on Best Bibles to Read for Beginners. I also highly recommend that you go to a bookstore so you can handle different bibles yourself and see what style you’re drawn to. It helps immensely to see and feel for yourself.

A Bible version that you can understand makes a world of difference! ESV, NIV, NASB, or NLT are a good variety to look through.

What is the proper way to read the bible?

We’ve covered how to start reading the Bible daily but is there a proper way to read the Bible? My only advice on this is to approach God’s living Word with reverence.

Reading the Bible is a treasure trove of wonder, instruction, redemption, power, and direction straight from the heart of God. He meets us in His Living Word and it is such a gift to us!

Approach reading the Bible with an earnest desire to meet Him in the pages!
