Praying for Your Family

Do you struggle with words to say when praying for your family?

Have you found yourself repeating and lifting up prayers for your family more out of habit rather than heart?

Many times we may ask God to bless our family, keep us safe, and help us to share God’s love.

But what if there’s more than that? What if you realized the power in your prayers and began fiercely praying for your family?

I firmly believe there is power in prayer because our prayers go to a powerful God. I think many times though we forget or overlook or even become casual with our prayers and who they’re going to.

Praying God’s Word Back to God

A few years ago I learned about praying God’s word back to God.

It sounds a bit funny to say it like that, yet it’s such a powerful approach for our prayers.

God’s word IS power.

For the word of God is living and active and full of power. Hebrews 4:12 AMP

Praying God’s Word back to God is such a powerful way to begin praying for your family!

Why? Because our prayers are pulled from the Source of Power and given back to the Power Source.

When we pray God’s Word specifically, we are connecting and uniting with God’s heart.

Isn’t God’s heart what we crave the most?

“When you speak from the Bible in your prayers, you will be led to an entirely different place in prayer – one you might’ve not thought was humanly possible, simply because the language of the Bible is so absolutely different than our own.” – Wesley and Stacey Campbell

What if we let the Bible become our prayer book for our family?

If this is something that is new to you or you’re not sure how to go about it, I have 4 prayers below to help get you started today!

Just a smidge of thrill and excitement though – praying powerful prayers this way will help build your trust in God as well! There are so many benefits to praying God’s Word back to Him!

Praying for your Family

When we believe God’s Word and then pray His Word, our faith grows. Let’s get started!

Let’s Pray for Your Family to Have a Heart for God

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. Mark 12:30

Jesus had just been asked what the most important commandment was and he responded with the words above.

Jesus, who is representing the Father, is telling us the most important commandment for us to follow is for us to love the Lord our God with everything we’ve got: heart, soul, mind, and strength.

This is paramount and most important.

As parents, we know there’s nothing greater than our children having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Let’s start praying for it.

Here’s what this can look like:

Father, you gave us the gift of your Word, your heart, and the gift of family. Thank you for showing us your love.

Give us the understanding to better know Your love and help us to return love to You with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Lord, we want to love you with everything we’ve got.

We ask this for our children. We pray that you draw them closer to you. Let them see their need for you. Fill them with wonder and capture their hearts. Fill them with your Spirit. Lord, we pray that as a family we would seek you above all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Prayer for Loving God’s Word

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. Joshua 1:8

This ‘Book of Instruction’ is God’s Word.

Studying, meditating, and saturating ourselves in God’s word is one of our greatest defenses.

It’s much more than a defense, it’s also a weapon, a shelter, and a guiding light.

THIS is part of the reason why this site, Raise Your Sword was created. The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Eph. 6:17), IS power. My hope and prayer is that we arm ourselves with it!

His Word illuminates God’s path for us. It’s a pathway that leads to His blessings.

When we spend time in God’s word, we better understand how to live according to its truth and we are better able to follow God’s direction.

I believe it’s so important for our kids to see and know the importance and joy that God’s Word brings to my life.

Excitement is contagious!

Prayer:

Father, thank you for your living and active Word. It’s full of your truth, promises, hope, redemption, and grace.

Lord, we pray that our kids will grow to love your word. Father, we ask you to spark a hunger and thirst for your word. We want to crave it and be guided by your Spirit to understand it.

We know your word brings wisdom, protection, and freedom. By your grace, may we as a family learn to lean on You and raise your Word above all things! In Jesus’ name, Amen

A Prayer for True Godly Friendships

One who has unrelieable friends soon comes to ruin, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

The gift of friendship is one of God’s most precious gifts to us.

You know that when you find those special friendships to hold on tightly to them. They’re pure gold.

We are created to be in relationship with others and friendships make a huge impact on our lives.

I made some of my most cherished friendships when I was in 6th and 7th grade and those girls are now my sisters. They became family a long time ago.

Even as an adult, I’ve received the cherished gift of friendship and my life has been (and is) forever impacted.

It’s so important to pray for our family to have true godly friendships with others. These friendships spur each other on in the faith.

Prayer:

Father, thank you for your design of friendship. Thank you that our godly friendships are connected by your Spirit and that we know true friends stick by us.

Please bring godly friendships into our family. Lord, help our children build friendships with others that will encourage and motivate them in their faith and to become closer to You.

Help each of us to be true friends back and love them like family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Prayer for Authenticity

Little children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 1 John 3:18

This one gets me every single time and has been heavy on my heart for a while now for myself and my family.

I tell my children all the time that it is very easy to say things, but much more difficult to actually live our words out.

Real love is an action. When we love others in this way, we do not expect anything in return.

To me, this verse is saying, “Prove it.” Prove your words with your actions.

Talk is cheap. If you really mean it, live it out.

Prayer:

Father, thank you for your Love in action when you gave your Son up for us. You’re the very essence of these words.

Lord, help us to be real and genuine with how we live. Let our words not be merely words but instead, proof of our love for you.

Guide us with your Spirit. Lord, teach us and guide us in all that we do, that we may glorify You by how we walk this out. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I hope these four examples of fiercely praying for your family are a helpful example of praying God’s word back to Him.

Your words do not have to be long or elaborate. In fact, that’s what is so awesome with this approach.

When you do not know the words to say or how to pray, just use God’s!
