No matter where you find yourself in life, we’ve all been impacted by the goodness of God. We have all experienced His lavish, outrageous, and undeserved kindness – even poured upon us on a daily basis – because His very nature is good. Certainly, it doesn’t always feel that way but the truth remains, God is good. The Goodness of God Scriptures will be an anchor to hold onto when we are tempted to believe otherwise.

The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. Nahum 1:7
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep..” John 10:11

How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. Psalm 31:19

For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. Psalm 84:11

What is the goodness of God?
Maybe you were taught this when you were young, “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen.” Do you find yourself daily declaring God’s goodness?
Are you overwhelmed by God’s goodness?
A.W. Tozer once declared, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
If we do not have a proper view of who God is, we will miss so much in this life. When Moses asked God to show him his glorious presence, God responded, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you.” Exodus 33:19
This is an incredible example of God’s goodness in the bible. Of all attributes that God could have referred to himself, He chose goodness. He is a God of pure goodness, defined within His very nature.
A powerful goodness of God sermon and explanation can be found in A.W. Tower’s book, “The Knowledge of the Holy” in which he shares the attributes of God and a chapter on God’s goodness.
One piece he shares, “The whole outlook of mankind might be changed if we could all believe that we dwell under a friendly sky and that the God of heaven, though exalted in power and majesty is eager to be friends with us.”
Having a proper view of God and knowing the goodness of God impacts absolutely everything.
What does the bible say about the goodness of God?
God is Good – An Attribute of God
The goodness of God is only one of His many attributes.
I often describe God as the Lavish Giver because of what He gave through His Son Jesus Christ and the many blessings He continues to bestow upon us. However, the goodness of God isn’t based solely on what He does but also on who He is.
He is absolutely and completely good. He is the highest standard of good, well beyond what we can even comprehend.
In Mark 10:18, Jesus responds to a rich young man, “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.”
I love this exchange between Moses and God found in Exodus 33:18-23. Moses asked God, “show me your glorious presence.” The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you.”
God’s presence is made of His goodness! His character, nature and very being is good. This is such a beautifully basic and complex thought to consider!

Experiencing God’s Goodness
What is God’s goodness in your life?
Are you experiencing the goodness of God daily? Have you spent some time recently reflecting on God’s goodness?
I want to encourage you to seek the evidence of God’s goodness in your life. I hope these bible verses celebrating God’s goodness have spurred you on.
In the New Testament, Paul was speaking to a crowd and shared these words, “…In the past he (God) permitted all nations to go their own ways, but he never left them without evidence of himself and his goodness. For instance, he sends you rain and good crops and gives you food and joyful hearts.” Acts 14:15-18
We have evidence of God’s goodness all around us. Using the Goodness of God Scriptures as a starting point, challenge yourself to look for the evidence of God’s goodness each day.
Set aside a few minutes to spend time experiencing and reflecting on God’s goodness today. You will be blessed for it!
When I think about the goodness of the Lord, I consider these ways in which God reveals His goodness:
- Salvation: the Good News of the Gospel
- Mercy and Forgiveness
- Nature: rain, sunlight, birds singing, beauty, sounds, life
- Needs being met
- Relationships, family, and friendships
- Food – supply and pleasure of a good meal
- God’s saving grace
- God’s rescue upon your life
- Blessings in your life
As you build your faith in the goodness of the Lord, hold tightly to scripture verses, and ask God to reveal Himself in the details of your day. Reflecting on God’s goodness daily will impact the way you go through your day.
