Waiting on the Lord. That sure goes against the grain of our fast-paced, keep-moving society! The more I study what it means to wait upon the Lord, the more the Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord woo me and I realize, it’s God Himself that makes the waiting worthwhile!
Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord
I’m going to dive right into the Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord. This may be a backwards approach as I feel, to a degree, that I’m attempting to persuade you why waiting on God is so worthwhile. Regardless of my feeble attempt to list the benefits of waiting on the Lord, I am confident He will woo you Himself. I pray the Holy Spirit stirs in your heart how desperate we are to wait on God daily.

Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord – He waits for you.
This is almost too much to comprehend. Isaiah 30:18 NLT tells us, “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help.”
Waiting on God seems such a difficult task for us because “waiting” and “patience” and “being still” does not come naturally to us. Once we surrender ourselves to Him though and consent to trusting Him, this verse in Isaiah tells us He’s waiting for us to do so.
Beyond the incredible thought that the God of the universe waits for us, it goes on to tell us so he can show us His love and compassion! The KJV says, “And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you.”
WOW. The Lord waits on us to be gracious to us! What an incredible benefit of waiting upon the Lord!

Benefits of Waiting on God – He works through you.
Another incredible benefit of waiting on God is realizing that all our attempts and efforts to control or force things into their rightful place (according to our lens) are feeble efforts. The bible tells us in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
This is a hard truth to accept because the world and our inner self has helped to convince us that we’re able, or capable, or have the self-confidence to accomplish great and mighty things. But apart from God, we can do nothing.
To accept in desperation our daily need of God will help us see and realize, HE works through us to accomplish more than we can possibly hope or imagine! We have to relinquish our control and surrender daily to Him.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory!” Ephesians 3:20

Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord – He carries you.
How often do we get worn out and tired of waiting on the Lord? Waiting on that prayer to be answered or for a job opportunity or for everything to fall in place? In our own strength, it does not take much to be worn and weary!
But another benefit of waiting on the Lord is that not only does He work it through us as mentioned above, but He also carries us and renews our strength!
“He never grows weak or weary. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:28-31
Another promise of God carrying us is found in Isaiah 46:4, “I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”
How the Gracious Giver pursues us! It’s not possible within our own strength and God promises us He will carry us through.
Benefits of Waiting Upon the Lord – He is the only One who can save you.
The more I learn and discover the benefits of waiting on God, the more clear it becomes how serious God is when He gave the first commandment, “Thou shall have no other gods before me” (Ex 20:3), or when Jesus said, “You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” (Lk 4:8)
The Lord expects to be our all in all. Everything to us. He desires to fill and meet our every need through Himself.
Psalm 62:1 NKJ tells us, “Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.” Or the AMP states it as, “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from Him comes my salvation.”
God alone. From Him comes our salvation.
How often do we look everywhere else but to God to save us? Or maybe we tend to go to God as a last resort?
When you pair this incredible benefit of waiting on God with the first one mentioned it looks like this: God alone is the only one who can save us and as He waits for us to turn to Him, He longs to be gracious and compassionate to us!
Lord, thank you for pouring yourself out to us and always patiently waiting for us to turn to you! May we daily wait on you and trust you to work all things according to your good, pleasing and perfect will!
If you have an interest in learning more about waiting on God, I cannot recommend Andrew Murray’s book, “Waiting on God” enough. It’s a 31 day devotional into the heart of meeting God as you wait on Him. It will stir, challenge, and ignite your soul to wait on God each and every day!
Benefits of Waiting upon the Lord – He shall not disappoint.
Another incredible benefit of waiting upon the Lord is that He assures us that we will not be put to shame. Isaiah 49:23 NLT says, “Then you will know that I am the LORD. Those who trust in me will never be put to shame.” NKJ states it as, “For they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.”
When we wait on the fulfillment of the Lord’s promises, we will be abundantly satisfied! In His promises, He pledges Himself for our deliverance. Our waiting will never be in vain! He longs to reveal Himself to us as the God to fulfill His every promise!
Again, cling tightly to this truth, “Blessed are those who wait for His help.” Isaiah 30:18
Benefits of Waiting on God – He will supply every need.
This is a beautiful and powerful truth but another hard one to accept especially if we determine our needs to be different from what God supplies. Ultimately, He knows what we truly need and as our Heavenly Father, we can trust Him fully to take care of us.
Philippians 4:19 ESV is the promise that, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
As we take claim of this promise and grow to trust Him at His word, it applies to waiting on God as we walk this out depending on the Lord.
Psalm 104:27-28 NLT says, “They all depend on you to give them food as they need it. When you supply it, they gather it. You open your hand to feed them, and they are richly satisfied.”
They are richly satisfied! God Himself is the supplier of every need. He creates us, sustains us, and maintains us! We only need to depend on Him to do so – and He will!
And even more than that, He delights to give to His children! What a Father we have!
Benefits of Waiting upon the Lord – He will bless you abundantly with Himself.
Finally, the ultimate benefit of waiting on God is that we will be blessed abundantly by knowing Him and resting in His presence! Many times we seek the blessing more than God, or we seek the gift more than the Giver.
God will always be more than the blessing. In our waiting, HE blesses us. He works all things according to His will. He waits for us to be gracious and compassionate to us!
It’s too much to comprehend that this God of Love longs to delight and bless us. He has inconceivably wonderful plans and purposes for each of us and patiently waits for us to turn completely to Him.
When we wait upon the Lord, we encounter the one and only Gracious One! With the longings of a father’s heart, our Gracious God waits that He may be gracious to us. Is there any other more worthwhile benefit!?
We praise and thank you, Lord!
