When I start to feel the pressure of chaos and stress mounting around me, more than any other Psalm, I tend to seek out a Psalm 91 Devotional. This Psalm always soothes my soul and brings my heart and mind back to the refuge and shelter of my Almighty God.
I recently came across this powerful quote from Charles Spurgeon, “When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head.” I’ve been chewing on this quote for a couple of weeks now and have found myself in the thick of challenging circumstances and experiencing the safety and security that Psalm 91 offers.
This devotion on Psalm 91 indeed brings me to the pillow upon which I can lay my head and safely rest in the sovereignty of God alone. The frustrations and circumstances have yet to change, but my position and awareness of where I am kept and dwell safely and secured in the secret place of the Most High gives me the anchor I need to press into and have pure breaths of refuge, protection, and hope. Join me in this secret power of Psalm 91 and let’s devote ourselves to seeking shelter in the safest hands that hold all things together!
Psalm 91 Devotional
This Psalm 91 Devotional is from verses 1-4 NLT. I’ve often wondered who wrote Psalm 91 as these Holy Spirit-inspired words are so beautiful and powerful but to the best of my knowledge, it shows the author is unknown. So what does Psalm 91 say?
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
May God’s Spirit transform our hearts and minds with the power of His words!
Devotions based on Psalms are so powerful. What I immediately notice from this Psalm 91 Devotional is the promise that we will find rest when we live in the shelter of the Most High.
How often do we seek shelter in other places other than our Most High God? I have a tendency to seek shelter in most anything that will eventually crumble and fall. Or maybe it won’t crumble and fall in my lifetime, but all shelters of earth are temporary and have the potential to let me down.
But the shelter of the Most High is always stable, unshakeable, and secure. There truly is no safer place to be than in the shelter of His protection.

What is the meaning of Psalm 91?
Over and over through these verses, we see the meaning of Psalm 91 as our secret place of absolute protection. When I consider verse 4, that God our Father will cover us with his feathers, and shelter us with his wings, I realize how kept, sealed, and guarded I am in the safety of His protection.
Every single detail of life must go through His armor of protection to get to me. He’s my strong tower, fortress, and shield. Psalm 91 is such a powerful display of God’s promises of protection.
And though we are not promised a life without danger, struggles, and challenges, we can know that when we are face to face with danger, we’re hemmed in by Him. When pressed, we’re pressed into His gentleness, care, and promise to restore and always be with us.
When I feel myself start to flounder with circumstances around me, God’s living word reminds me He is there, faithful to protect and guard me.
How do you dwell in the secret place of the Most High?
For us to dwell in the secret place of the Most High, we must trust in Him and believe the promises of God’s protection that He gives. One thing about this particular Psalm 91 devotional is noticing Psalm 91:4 NIV: his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
It’s not based on our faithfulness, but His. How often I determine what I should do, or I lack to do or fail to secure when I’m reminded, it’s His faithfulness I am to trust and rely on. What a difference!
It changes everything when we no longer consider our abilities and efforts but instead, rest and rely on His faithfulness and promises. That’s what brings our armor and protection. It’s always Him alone.
God is our shield of protection.
