How To Spend Time With God in The Morning

When it comes to ideas and ways to spend time with God, it begins with making a choice to carve out time during your day to spend with God. Intentional time with Him alone. Time is a precious commodity but the value of time with God doesn’t even compare to the cost.

God tells us Himself in Isaiah 66:2, “But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”

There are many different ways to spend time with God as you’ll see below but the most important choice we can make in day is carving out time in God’s Word and prioritizing Him in our day.

Making the decision and priority to put God first will truly change the trajectory of your life. Let’s dive into some creative ways to spend time with God beyond our quiet times in His Word.

How can I spend time alone with God?

When you consider the New Testament and the disciples meeting Jesus for the first time, it all began with an invitation. “Come, follow me.” Matthew 4:19. God also invites us as well to come and have time with Him. We were created for communion with Him and he delights when we respond to connect with God spiritually.

Multiple times Jesus drew away from the crowds to spend time with his Heavenly Father alone. Likewise, we need to set time aside to draw near to God and savor time in the presence of God.

Whether that’s through prayer, or scripture reading, or simply “being” with God, we always have an open invitation to spend time with Him and walk with Him throughout our day.

Benefits of Quiet Time With God

There is nothing in all the world that compares to being with our Creator. It is difficult and distracting in our fast-paced world to make God a priority but once we’re convinced He is beyond worth it, the clamor of the world will diminish it’s hold on us as we our captivated by Him instead.

He alone gives us peace in storms, strength to carry on, freedom from our sins, renewal in faith, love, mercy, and forgiveness through his Son, and joy in our days.

Spending time with God far exceeds anything else in comparison. I’m spurred on to know God more and more and in turn, He woos me more to have quiet time with Him.

Ways To Spend Time With God

1. Ways to Spend Time With God – Make a Daily Date

Martin Luther is quoted as saying, “I have so much to do today that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” We tend to do the opposite and push God down the list until we get to all “the other things”. Our time with God is what gets us through the other things!

It is our most important priority.

One of my absolute favorite times of the day is meeting God in His Word – whether it’s first thing in the morning or in the wee hours of the night when it’s quiet and still. Having time set aside with God is what our souls crave and where we grow and are built up in Him. Make this sacred time with Him a daily date – the highest priority.

2. Start a Gratitude Journal

Another creative way to spend time with God is to start a gratitude journal. Taking time to appreciate and savor gifts and blessings from the Lord draws our hearts to Him. But take it a step further (or first step?) and focus on your gratitude for who God is.

  • Psalm 121 shows us He is our Keeper.
  • Psalm 124 shows our help is in the name of the Lord.
  • Psalm 125 shows us the Lord surrounds His people!

These are just a few quick examples of ways we can be immensely full of gratitude for who our God is! Our gratitude fuels our adoration for our Great God!

You see what you begin to seek. When you seek God, you will find God and the abundant amount of blessings he’s poured upon your life.

Here’s a free Gratitude Journal to help get you started!

3. Closet Retreat

Aka a “secret room”. Jesus withdrew to retreat to be with his Father as well.

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:6

When our kids would have quiet time, I would retreat to our closet to spend time with God! I got the idea after seeing the movie War Room.

It wasn’t very big but it truly became one of my favorite places to spend quality time with God. Find yourself a special place to retreat to for different ways to connect with God. Use a devotional, follow a bible reading plan, pray, or journal to connect with God!

4. Use Driving Time Wisely

When it comes to places to spend time with God, another spot is in the car! Come to Him in worship through song and praise. Download the free YouVersion Bible App to listen to scripture, play Christian podcasts, listen to worship music, or use the time to pray.

God desires your heart. Period. Wherever you find yourself, be creative in how you seek to spend time with God throughout the day.

5. Ways to Spend Time With God – Write Out Scripture

Other ways to connect to God could be through writing out scripture. If you’re following a bible reading plan or a devotional, copy a verse that sticks out to you and make it personal as you meditate and ponder it throughout the day. Insert your name into it.

Here’s an example from Proverbs 3:5-6:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Personalize it:

I will trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways I will acknowledge him and he will make my paths straight.

Writing out scripture is a powerful way to get God’s Word into your heart and bring your mind to meditate on it throughout the day. The Holy Spirit will use this to transform your heart and root you in God’s Word!

6. Color A Bible Verse

When it comes to unique ways to spend time with God, have you ever considered coloring bible verses? Seriously, hear me out. God uses His Word to transform us and it is actually possible through coloring or writing out scripture.

Just recently I saw a beautifully written scripture verse – 1 Peter 5:10 And after you have suffered a little while the God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

I decided to pick up a pen and try to write out the scripture the way the artist had drawn it. Over and over I was writing this verse out and before long, I was completely captured by the words, “the God of all grace…will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” The God of ALL grace. Who can compare?!

There is power in God’s Word and He will use it even in creative ways to speak to us.

This is also a great way to spend time with God corporately as you could do so with your Sunday School class, kids, or even your friends!

7. Pray a Psalm

Have you ever prayed Psalms before? I’m convinced there is a Psalm for every single emotion we experience! Find a Psalm that applies to where your heart is in that day and pray the words to the Lord.

Again, make it personal. There is something incredibly beautiful about praying God’s Word back to Him as you actively pray through a Psalm and personalize it for yourself.

Here are a few Psalms that may help you get started:

  • When Worried: Psalm 27
  • When Afraid: Psalm 6
  • When Seeking God: Psalm 118
  • When Praising God: Psalm 18

8. Listen to Worship Music

When our days are busy and full and we’re hustling throughout the day, sprinkle the day with worship music! In fact, start your day getting ready with praise music!

There is great power in praise, and it’s so important we look for ways to praise and worship Him throughout our day. When we spend our time praising God, our hearts change, the atmosphere changes, and God is glorified!

Our minds shift from worldly to heavenly thinking when we turn to praise.

9. Snack Break With God

When you finish saying the blessing before a meal, or especially when you’re by yourself having a snack, keep the conversation going with God! Share your heart and thoughts with Him as you have a snack.

Instead of scrolling social media, feast on God’s Word! There is nothing better that you could feast on and it will greatly benefit you and those you encounter!

The truth is, there are many unique ways to spend time with God all around us. When we set our hearts to seek God, we’ll spot more and more ways to meet Him!

10. Ways To Spend Time With God – Practice Pausing

This is a goodie and new for myself. Have you ever considered “practice pausing” as a way to spend time with God? We live in an instant gratification world. It takes discipline to pause before almost anything – speaking, listening, purchasing, or any decisions we make throughout the day.

What if we began to practice pausing and seek out God in the pause? If we implemented this, we’d easily find so many moments to be with God throughout the day it’d be incredible!

As Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Spending Time With God Bible Verses

When it comes to selecting a spending time with God bible verse, there are plenty to choose from! I’m listing a handful to hopefully inspire you to seek time with God all throughout the day!

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Mark 1:35

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

I hope these bible verses about spending time with God encourage and inspire you!

Spending Time with God + Spiritual Growth

The only way for spiritual growth to take place in your life is to set aside time with the Lord on a daily basis. The Holy Spirit will work through your heart and guide you each step of the way. Each moment you seek to spend with God will be blessed by Him.

Keep making God a priority in your life and look for creative ways to spend time with God! I hope this list encouraged you and gave you some ideas to implement.

  1. Im a man but your blog has been a recent breath of fresh air to me and my walk with Christ! I first ran across your page on Google when I searched for what does it look like to put God 1st. Unfortunately the 1st answer Google offered was a quote from the Huffington Post that was a worldly definition but as I looked further I ran across your blog called Worthwhile Benefits of Putting God First. Me and my entire family (Wife and 3 children) just beat Covid – 19 and through that affliction God restored my relationship with Him and realigned everything! All 5 of us beat Covid but the Spiritual healing that came from the experience far outweighs the physical healing because He made ALL things new! Now Im on FIRE for Jesus and He is in the proper place of 1st! Thank you for your stand in Christ Jesus and biblical perspectives! I know your blog may be catered to women but wisdom from on High is from God so Im here for it. Its blessing my life so I have been sharing it with everyone! Thanks for keeping it practical, scriptural, biblical, and Holy! I pray that God continues to blesses your endeavors and expand your territory!

    1. What a testimony! Praise the Lord!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me and the work the Lord is doing in your life.
