Overcoming Fear with Faith – Look Back First
In order to move forward in overcoming fear with faith, take a moment to look back on your life and consider the times you did something even though you were scared to do it.
Consider a job promotion or opportunity you were fearful you weren’t qualified for or maybe you actually weren’t qualified for the position but the opportunity presented itself.
Or what about becoming a new mom??
Was there a move you were fearful to make?
What about a life change and fear of the future?
Hopefully, you have a memory or moment in time that you were fearful but you still moved forward in spite of that fear.
Did you survive? (I’m banking on yes since you’re reading this – Yay!!) But seriously, when we take the time to look back, we often see we made it through the fear.
I want to make note of that so you can be reminded, you’ve done this before. Faith over fear is possible! Overcoming fear and living by faith is available to you!
God’s carried you through fear before and you’ve made it to the other side.
Bible Study On Fear And Faith
Overcoming fear with faith is all throughout the bible. For the last several months I’ve been doing a bible study on Exodus and Genesis. All was well until I got to the story of Moses.
You know the one – Moses and the burning bush.
It’s found in Exodus 3.
This is the perfect story of overcoming fear with faith. At this point in the story, Moses had approached the burning bush and God has just asked him to lead His people out of Egypt.
This is the dialogue between God and Moses that transpired:
But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?”
God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.”
But Moses protested.. (Exodus 3:11-13)
But Moses protested again..(Exodus 4:1)
I can relate to Moses 1000%. I’ve used that line before – “Who am I to…..” Can you relate?
Even after God told him that He’d be with him, he still continued to protest.
How many times do we do that? We question and doubt ourselves and find every excuse and reason of why we are NOT able to do the task or job at hand.
Does anything come to mind for you?
Has anything been placed on your heart and you keep pushing it away because you’ve convinced yourself you’d fail at it so you shouldn’t even bother?
I hope that changes! Let’s see what unfolded for Moses.
Ultimately, Moses ended up saying yes in spite of his fear, and story upon story of his walk with God was poured into the bible.
Faith Over Fear Led to:
- Moses leading God’s people out of Egypt and slavery.
- Witnessing the power of God through the plagues.
- Experiencing the Passover and deliverance into freedom.
- Miraculous rescuing through the Red Sea.
- Provision from Heaven in the desert through manna, quail, and water.
Each of these blessings and miracles Moses experienced and they were ALL on the other side of his fear.
Overcoming fear with faith is possible for you, too!
Overcoming Fear and Living By Faith
Do you believe overcoming fear with faith can happen for you?
One of the reasons I can relate so much to Moses with his protesting is that I tend to focus on fear and what is driving the fear.
For example, my mind can dwell on what I’m lacking, or not capable of, or how I can’t do it, or why I can’t do it, or all that will go wrong, etc…______ fill in the blank.
Moses had just been told that God would be with him, yet he continued to protest.
We’re told the very same thing:
So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6-8
This is a powerful promise.
Our God personally promises and pledges Himself to us.
He goes before us. He will never fail us nor leave us.
This is where our thoughts should dwell: on God and His promise to us.
It was dwelling and chewing on this verse and thoughts of overcoming fear and living by faith when this question kind of wrecked my mind.
What if you never get to the blessings on the other side of fear?
God tells us to not be afraid. He has good plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11). The spirit of fear is not from God – For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7)
What if Moses missed this opportunity because of protesting God’s invitation to join Him?
Faith Over Fear
Moses didn’t know at the burning bush what God had in store for him when he walked out overcoming fear with faith. He faced fear without knowing that God would:
- Equip him to successfully lead Israel out of slavery.
- He’d become the leader of God’s people.
- He’d witness the miracle of the Passover or the splitting of the Red Sea.
- The encounter with God on Mount Sinai was in store for him.
These blessings were all on the other side of fear.
There are blessings on the other side of fear for us, too!

Faith Overcomes Fear Bible Verses
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
He knows your future is set and secure. Just as God equipped Moses for his calling, God will equip you and I for anything He’s called us to as well!
He’ll always go with us and before us.
The sweet spot is resting in God and the peace He gives that passes all understanding. The fear of failing is a roadblock for opportunities God has in store for you.
