For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9
The phrase “for your sake” is small, yet deeply powerful. These words in 2 Corinthians 8:9 aren’t just poetic—they carry the weight of the gospel itself. In this short sentence, we see the heart of Christ, the cost of our salvation, and the richness of God’s grace.
In this post, we’ll explore what it means that Jesus became poor “for your sake” and how understanding this truth can transform the way we view our identity, our struggles, and our purpose as followers of Christ.

“For your sake” in the Bible
He became poor for you and me.
For our sake, He gave up everything.
It wasn’t begrudgingly or forced or with feet dragging or an ounce of resentment.
That’s so hard to comprehend sometimes such a selfless Savior when I’m so aware of my own selfishness and tendencies.
To consider just today the times I’ve been annoyed or irritated to have to give up my comfort or patience or time for others and now to consider my Savior willingly in great love and obedience to the Father gave up His life for my sake. Passages like 2 Corinthians 8:9 can really rattle your heart and overwhelm you with gratitude.
The Riches of Christ Before the Cross
Before we can grasp what Jesus gave up, we need to understand what He had.
Jesus, the eternal Son of God, lived in the fullness of heaven’s glory—perfect unity with the Father, surrounded by worship, possessing all power and authority. He lacked nothing. There was no pain, no limitation, no rejection.
Yet He willingly left it all behind.
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage…” (Philippians 2:6)
The richness Paul refers to isn’t material wealth—it’s divine majesty. And Christ laid it aside for your sake.
“For your sake”.
From eternity he was rich beyond our understanding – a wealth we can’t even come close to understanding. He was with the Father, adored by Him with boundless delight and communion. He made the heavens, controlled nature, and reigned in complete fullness needing nothing because He had everything.
Yet in love, “for your sake”, He came down.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:14
His affection and love for us motivated and moved Him to give it all up. He set aside his dignity, his rights, his heavenly reign and what He could rightly claim as His, to become one of us. The Lord of glory – our Infinite God – willingly came down to be limited in flesh and body.
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
It pleased Him to call himself the Son of man.
Who could fathom such a Savior!
“For your sake” he was born in a filthy manger, experienced agony in the garden of Gethsemane, suffered a gruesome death on the cross, and was buried in the tomb of rocks He created.
He did this for rebels. For the ungrateful and undeserving. For the wretched, dead in our own sins, far from righteousness, mean, and wicked sinners that justly deserve wrath.
“For your sake” He humbled himself to give himself fully and completely, holding nothing back to secure our redemption, to make us His children.
“For your sake” He now victoriously represents us in Heaven.
He fills us with His Spirit.
He gives us new life that has His resurrected power pulsing inside us!
He keeps us, forever committed to us by the permanent covering of His own blood.
“For your sake” He gave up Himself to continually give us Himself.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Romans 8:31-32
How could He now withhold anything GOOD from His beloved when He has already given up everything for us?
For your sake, and mine.
Oh Lord, may it be our greatest privilege to live now for you.
To love you like you have loved us, and live our lives for your most glorious sake!

Living in Light of His Sacrifice
If Jesus gave up everything for your sake, how should that impact how you live?
Here are a few ways to respond:
- Live with gratitude
Remind yourself daily of the cross. Worship not just for what God gives, but for who He is and what He’s done. - Walk in freedom, not shame
Guilt tells you you’re unworthy. Grace tells you Christ made you worthy. Don’t live burdened by a debt Jesus already paid. - Serve others sacrificially
If Jesus gave up everything for your sake, you can lay down your pride, your time, your comfort—for the sake of others. - Rest in your identity
You are not defined by your past or your performance. You are defined by the One who gave everything for your sake.

When You Feel Unworthy, Remember This
There will be days when you don’t feel worthy of God’s love. Days when shame whispers lies. But Scripture doesn’t ask, “Are you good enough?” It declares that Jesus is.
He chose to set His love upon you. His sacrifice wasn’t based on your performance—it was based on His purpose.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Final Thoughts
The words “for your sake” aren’t just part of a verse—they’re a love letter written in blood. They’re the reason you can face tomorrow with confidence, live today with purpose, and leave your past behind.
Jesus became poor so you could become rich—not in money, but in mercy. He emptied Himself so you could be filled with grace. He gave up everything, not just for the world in general, but for your sake.
Charles Spurgeon has an incredible piece titled, “Christ’s Motive and Ours” which dissects 2 Corinthians 8:9 “for your sakes” and “for His sake”. I highly recommend the read!
Lord, for our sake you cover us with a robe of righteousness, you’ve forgiven our sins, you plant us on a firm foundation, and have established and rooted us in YOU. For our sake. You prepare a place for us in heaven, have written our names in the Book of Life, and daily prepare us for eternity with you. For our sake! We are sealed and kept by you. Lord, may we live now for your sake alone. It is the very least we can do. When I’m tempted to live for me, remind me throughout today what you did for my sake so I live in gratitude to you. Thank you for always loving me! In your most precious name, Amen.

Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement, Connie!
Hi! I just found this. I have been struggling with coming back to Jesús after feeling so ashamed and guilty for failing over and over. For not being able to move beyond my depression and anxiety. I feel like there is something wrong with me. Why can’t I live my faith confidently and hope instead of fear or throw endless pity parties at myself? This has been keeping me so frustrated and in anguish, rejecting God’s forgiveness and love because I am so angry at myself that I can run to Him, I am so undeserving. All these in my mind daily and now your words have given me new perspective on who He is, I will continúe to meditate on this. Thank you.
Oh my dear, I have struggled so much with this myself with receiving God’s forgiveness and knowing I am so underserving. The incredible news of the Gospel is that we are fully forgiven and covered completely by His blood, made righteous because of Him, and are made brand new creations! Life changes when we live inside the Gospel and from a place of celebration. I am continually learning to shift my view from me to the Lord and that is always where I find that my failures diminish and the awe and wonder of His work and grace increase! I am praying now that the miraculous freedom we have in Christ is realized and known! You are loved.
